I like how you blend the authentic cooking details into a fairly serious, almost angsty, story and have it work so well. It's also fun to read phrases like "flip your wig" (or whatever it was) as they are so true to the time.
Marvelous job of portraying the pain of being a young adult and of being in a same-sex relationship during that era. Very well-written too.

I think that you must be psychic. How else could you know how much I needed this story and subsequently post it today?
I was confirming appointments for Tuesday when I called one of our patients, who happens to be gay. He canceled due to his and his lover's car being vandalized.
Someone, they think it was a neighbor (isn't that a comforting thought), spray painted homophobic slurs all over their car. Now he's depressed, doesn't feel safe and has the unwelcome expense of having to repaint his car.
I know I shouldn't be shocked anymore by man's inhumanity to man, but it still does, especially when it hits so close to home.
Thank you for your story that made me smile. Maybe the neighbor is like Dougy and just needs to step out of the closet.
