The atmosphere and the dialogue were perfect and I felt, despite rational odds, that Illya, too, would make it out of the field and into Napoleon's arms safely and permenantly. (Perhaps that's reading more into the scene than I should, but, despite the melancholy tone, the story let me do it and I love that.)
